It opens in Kensington Gardens on the last ordinary afternoon in history and ends in the New Mexico desert at 5:29 in the morning on 16 July 1945, with you as the reason the gadget works. Brian Moriarty laid a fantasy of toadstools and sundials and paper cranes over the top of the twentieth century’s actual arithmetic, then closed the trap: the puzzle you have been solving all along turns out to be the one that cannot be un-solved. Its ending is neither a victory nor a death but a fact you are made complicit in—and it is the only game that has ever made an origami crane feel like an accusation.
