Brian Moriarty took the familiar pleasures of Zork—an ancient kingdom, a dangerous wilderness, a ridiculous inventory—and set them loose inside a role-playing game. You are not merely a visitor in the Great Underground Empire’s distant aftermath: you have attributes, equipment, spells, fights you can lose, and a sprawling landscape that refuses to wait politely around the next compass direction. The prose has Zork’s old wit, but Beyond Zork is fascinated by systems: strange creatures trade rumors, objects change the odds, and the map becomes a genuine place rather than a sequence of rooms. It is Infocom trying to make parser fiction bigger, riskier, and more alive—and somehow still remembering that the best thing in a dungeon may be a joke.
