MICHAEL’S HISTORY WITH THIS WORLD

Owned and played as a kidFinished as a kid

Douglas Adams and Steve Meretzky built a game that lies to you, withholds from you, and occasionally kills you for being reasonable—then shipped it with a Don’t Panic! button, sunglasses that go black at the first sign of danger, a microscopic space fleet, and a quantity of no tea. The babel fish puzzle alone converted a generation of children into people who take notes. It is the one parser game where the correct posture toward the parser is suspicion, and the joke is that the packaging told you so: the fluff was authentic, the peril was real, and the tea was never coming.

THE ARCHIVE DRAWER

The world beyond the box.

Front and back photographs document Michael’s sealed Apple II copy—including the Software Publishers Association platinum seal, the bonus-checks sticker that expired in March 1988, and the later Mediagenic distribution label applied to the back. The package shipped with a Don’t Panic! button, authentic fluff, peril-sensitive sunglasses, a microscopic space fleet, and no tea; it needed no map. Historical materials remain with the preservation projects that made them available.
