Deadline begins with a death that has already been explained. Marshall Robner locked himself in his library, took a fatal dose of antidepressants, and left behind a story that every witness agrees is suicide. Marc Blank makes that neatness feel suspicious. As the Chief of Detectives, you have twelve hours at the Robner estate to test alibis, search the house, send evidence to the lab, and decide whether the attorney who hired you is right to want the whole business put to rest. The residents keep their own schedules; clues can appear, disappear, or be ruined while you are elsewhere. Its police dossier was not decoration—it was part of the case. Deadline is where Infocom first made the player a detective in the fullest sense: not a person who finds the answer, but one who has to earn a conviction.
