What you find is not glamour but cramped wagons, exhausted performers, exotic animals, and a conversation about the kidnapping of the owner’s daughter. Jeff O’Neill makes the traveling show feel like a defensive little town that happens to pack up overnight: everyone has a role, everyone is tired, and none of them particularly wants an outsider asking questions. The rescue is a mystery, but the real pleasure is backstage access to a place designed to look magical from the bleachers and complicated, seedy, and dangerous from within.
